Chants flood the stadium beyond the closed locker room door, the cheer squad spreading hype throughout the packed stands. All twelve players for our team are receiving a pep talk from last year’s star players, bullshit about being a family and putting faith in one another that I don’t wanna hear. Rumours have it one of their own checked out to join a mob and try to kill another one of them, so if there was going to be someone I listened to - it wouldn’t be any of them.

Rolling my neck, the silk of my jersey shifts against my inked skin like a lover’s caress. A black number 1 sits in the centre of the yellow material, clearly meant for me. Well, technically it was originally Bucktooth Bill’s on the other end of the bench (not his legal name I’m certain), but he offered it to up to me even before I beat the shit out of him for touching it in the first place. I got the number I wanted and my knuckles sang with glory that day, win win.

Clayton is here for appearances only, ready to take his spot on the bench and watch the entire game from the side lines. Coach had suggested he and I could take turns, play a half each to make it fair. But there’s no fairness in the real world, it’s ugly and poisonous where people with money thrive and those without take bribes - like coach did. And offering to either double or cancel his paycheque this month is definitely a bribe, not a threat. I’m not a total monster....all of the time.

The gymnasium is at full capacity tonight, evident by the even split of cheers and boos that sound as the team from Armitage State enter. I hop up from the bench, ready to get tonight over with. Whatever reason I joined the team for in the first place still mostly alludes me. I do enjoy having a reason to leave the house each morning, a boost of exercise and adrenaline I was lacking before. But now I’m about to head out in front of the entire college, I can’t summon a shred of enthusiasm. Maybe today’s the day everyone realises I’m nothing but a walking legacy and superficial last name.

Frowning at the train of thought, I start to jump on the spot and stretch my arms. I don’t get nervous and I sure as shit never feel anxiety. I’m sure the mix of feelings are purely eagerness for the after party which will see little Harper at my mercy at last. Yeah, that must be it. The team do an immature hands-in cheer for themselves before joining me by the door.

“Look after one another out there,” Coach chimes in for the first time as he makes his way to the front beside me. With one last side glance in my direction, he pushes his way into the gymnasium and the crowd on our side erupts. The noise is deafening, the atmosphere clogging my throat.
